The unemployment rate in the state, was 4.5 in the fourth quarter which by the second quarter this year went up to a staggering 8.1% in the year 2007. The US economy accounted for 247,000 job losses and amongst the states, Pennsylvania seems to have been hit one of the hardest, with 182,000 jobs lost in July 2009. Over two and half million jobs have been lost so far in 2009, according to the data the Labour Department has released.

According to khabrein, arch’s monthly loss is up slightly from the loss of 651,000 jobs in February, although it’s less than the number of jobs lost in January. That figure was revised up to a loss of 741,000 jobs, the biggest monthly drop in 59 years.

The unemployment rate climbed to 8.5 percent from 8.1 percent in February, in line with economists’ forecasts. It was the highest since October, 1983.

The job losses were felt throughout all areas of the economy, with the manufacturing and construction sectors as well as business and professional services industries all cutting more than 100,000 jobs each in March.

Retailers and leisure and hospitality companies also trimmed jobs, as did the government. The only industry to post a gain in jobs during the month was the education and health care services group – and that sector added only a modest 8,000 jobs in the month.

Employers cut back the number of hours for their workers as well. The average hourly work week fell to 33.2 hours, the lowest level on record going back to 1964.

In the meantime the unemployment rate dipped slightly in the US in July as the rate of job losses reported slowed, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday.

    I filed my claim and followed all the instructions. My first pmt of benefits is suppose to be 3/16/10 after midnight and I have not received my debit card so I called the card services. They said it was mailed out and returned for a bad address. I have been receiving all of my other mail from UC so what happened? Now, I will not be able to access my funds for up to 10 business days. I think this is awful and I am very upset. Not sure this is the site to complain but it is the only one that has given me an opportunity to express my upset.
