According to nydailynews : Somehow that day in 1977, Tom Watson still hadn’t beaten Jack Nicklaus at Turnberry, even after Watson had knocked a 7-iron stiff, two feet, on the last hole. Somehow Nicklaus, down a stroke to Watson, had gouged an 8-iron out of the rough and out of what looked like a sinkhole from the right of the 18th fairway and gotten it on the green, 40 feet away. Of course Nicklaus made the putt, forcing Watson to make his to win the British Open.
Lee Trevino was standing behind me that day when Watson’s 7-iron briefly looked as if it might go in the hole. When it finally stopped rolling, Trevino laughed and said, “Let the big dog eat,” and went back to the locker room. He was down there when Watson tapped in for the final-round 65 to go with the 65 he had shot the day before. It meant that Nicklaus had shot 65-66 and not won the ‘77 British Open, the best that ever was.
When it was over that night, after Watson had been presented the Claret Jug, I was part of Watson’s dinner party in the grand dining room of the Turnberry Hotel. When Watson led us to the table that night, the entire room stood and applauded.
He was 27 that night. The day before had been his fourth wedding anniversary with his first wife, Linda. So they celebrated that in the dining room, along with the golf he had just played to beat the greatest golfer of all time. Somebody sent over a bottle of champagne and at one point during the fine, long night Watson said, “I felt like I was behind all day.”
He smiled and said, “Until I wasn’t, of course.”
He eventually got up from the table and said his good nights and walked back across the dining room to more applause and stopped in a small ballroom where a band was packing up. But they saw that it was Watson and so they stayed around to play “Blue Skies” as Tom Watson danced with his wife.
He is 59 now and back at the Ailsa Course at Turnberry and leading the 2009 British Open more than three decades after the 7-iron finally knocked out Nicklaus. There he was on the back nine Friday at the same time Tiger Woods could not hold his game together, Watson making the kind of putts coming home that he had made on No.16 in ‘77, the 60-footer that told us all that Watson was through chasing, that now Jack Nicklaus was chasing him.
“I took my best shot,” Nicklaus would say later.
That of course was the day when Watson turned to Nicklaus as they were walking together off the 14th tee, after they had thrown everything at each other for three straight days and nothing had been decided yet, and said, “This is what it’s all about, isn’t it?”
