The British Open Golf Championship 2009 Leaderboard Results
Here is the result of the first day of 2009 British Golf Open Championship. Tom Watson is leading The British Golf Open Championship 2009. This year’s championship has began at Turnberry in Ayrshire and starts today 16th July and will be finished on Sunday 19th July, when the winner will be announced.
There’s a serious case of deja vue at Turnberry as Tom Watson leads The Open Championship 32 years after his triumph here over Jack Nicklaus. He shares the top spot with Australia’s John Senden, who plies his trade on the US PGA Tour, and who came into the Championship as a late replacement when Jeev Mikha Singh pulled out.
Watson’s Turnberry epic followed two years after his first Open victory at Carnoustie, and he went on to take three more titles at Muirfield, Troon and Birkdale. “It’s good to play in an Open at Turnberry again,” said Watson as he surveyed the lengthened course earlier this week. That must be something of an understatement now that he shares the lead at four under par at the age of 59.
Senden has been a regular million dollar-plus earner for each of the last three years in America and rates highly on the rankings in greens hit in regulation. He has four top 10 finishes to his credit this season.
He created his score entirely on the back nine, having made par at each of the first 12 holes. Then he leapt up the leader board with four birdies in five holes from the 13th to complete his round in 66 and take the clubhouse lead.
