Wimbledon Quarterfinals 2009 Preview:
[2] Roger Federer (SUI) vs. [22] Ivo Karlovic (CRO), Centre Court

Roger Federer, the five-time former champion and second seed, takes an 8-1 record into the first quarter-final on Centre Court against No. 22 seed Ivo Karlovic of Croatia.

Federer has been in superb form in his 11th appearance at the All England Club. He has won 44 of the past 45 matches since 2003 on the SW19 grass courts. He has had his serve broken just three times – saving 11 of 14 break points – in victories over Yen-Hsun Lu, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, Philipp Kohlschreiber and Robin Soderling. The 27 year old, who finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal in last year’s final, has hit 59 aces at The Championships so far.

That pales in comparison to his quarter-final opponent World No. 36 Karlovic, who has fired a tournament-high 137 aces and held serve in all 79 of his service games. The 30 year old is making his first appearance in a Grand Slam championship quarter-finals in his 25th major. He is attempting to become the third different Croat to reach the semi-finals at the All England Club, joining 2001 champ Ivanisevic, and Mario Ancic, who reached the semi-finals in 2004. The last Croat to reach the semi-finals at a Grand Slam event was Ivan Ljubicic at Roland Garros in 2006.

Wimbledon Quarterfinals 2009 Preview:
[3] Andy Murray (GBR) vs. [WC] Juan Carlos Ferrero (ESP), Centre Court

Third-seeded Scot Andy Murray and wild card entry Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain are the second match on Centre Court. The pair met for the first time at the AEGON Championships at The Queen’s Club earlier this month, with Murray winning the semi-final clash 6-2, 6-4.

Murray, a winner of four ATP World Tour titles this season, is making his second straight Wimbledon quarter-final appearance. On Monday the Scot beat Stanislas Wawrinka in five sets in the first full match completed with the Centre Court roof closed, which ended at 10:39 p.m. local time. The 22 year old has held serve in 69 of his 74 service games thus far, saving 14 of 19 break points. In nine grass court matches this year, the World No. 3 has won 22 of 25 sets overall. He has been broken five times at The Championships this year and is 18-52 in break point conversion.

Ferrero, the lowest ranked player in the quarter-final draw at No. 70 in the South African Airways 2009 ATP Rankings, is making his second Wimbledon quarter-final appearance in three years. His wins over No. 10-ranked Fernando Gonzalez and No. 8-ranked Gilles Simon were his first back-to-back wins over Top 10 players since he defeated three successive Top 10 players at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Cincinnati in August 2006. The former World No. 1 has a 22-8 career record at the All England Club, which is tied for second among Spaniards (Manolo Santana-26, Nadal-22). He is bidding to reach his first Grand Slam championship semi-final since the 2004 Australian Open. In April, he broke a 110-tournament ATP World Tour title drought with his first title in more than five year at Casablanca (d. Florent Serra).

Wimbledon Quarterfinals 2009 Preview:
[24] Tommy Haas (GER) vs. [4] Novak Djokovic (SRB), Court One

Fourth seed and 2007 semi-finalist Novak Djokovic takes a 2-1 lead into his quarter-final on Court One against No. 24 seed Tommy Haas on Wednesday. Haas, who is appearing in his first Wimbledon quarter-final, won the pair’s last meeting at the Gerry Weber Open final in Halle earlier this month to lift his 12th ATP World Tour title.

Haas, at 31, is the oldest player remaining in the quarter-final draw. He won the longest singles match of The Championships, a four-hour 28-minute battle in the third round, saving two match points against Marin Cilic in a five-set win. He followed it up with a straight sets win over Igor Andreev. Overall he has been broken seven times thus far, holding 65 of his 72 service games. Unbeaten on grass courts this season, with a 9-0 record, he is attempting to reach his fourth Grand Slam championship semi-final after three appearances in the Australian Open last four.

Djokovic has been competing under the radar at The Championships, as the media focuses on the exploits of Federer and Murray. With the most match wins of any player on the ATP World Tour circuit this year, Djokovic comes into the quarter-finals with a 47-13 record. The 22 year old reached the Wimbledon semi-finals two years ago (l. to Nadal). Djokovic has been broken eight times in the first four rounds, saving 13 of 21 break points, while breaking opponents 23 times (most of remaining field). Since losing the opening set in a tie-break to Julien Benneteau in the first round, he has not dropped a set in the next 12 sets.
