The Diversity Immigrant Visa lottery is also known as the Green Card Lottery. This lottery program is a United States congressionally-mandated program for receiving a Permanent Resident Card in United States. By the Department of State, this program is administrated annually. It held under the terms of Section 203(c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).
Every year, 50,000 permanent resident visas are available for the persons from countries with low rates of immigration, under this Act. The person who was born to a man among 50,000 immigrants to the United States is not eligible to get diversity visa.
This residents are divided on regional basis. The regions from which less immigrants were sent to the United States in the previous 5 years, received more diversity visas. Africa and Europe received about 80% visas this year in the lottery. Another rule of this lottery is that, no country could receive more than 7% of the diversity visas.
