Jack Murtha Dead In Virginia Hospital
John P. Murtha passed away peacefully this afternoon at 1:18 p.m. in a Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, VA. At his bedside was his family. Murtha, 77, was Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense.
First elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in February of 1974, Murtha dedicated his life to serving his country both in the military and in the halls of Congress. He had a long and distinguished 37-year career in the U.S. Marine Corps, retiring from the Marine Corps Reserve as a colonel in 1990.A former Marine, he became the first Vietnam War combat Veteran elected to the U.S. Congress.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement that day that “with the passing of John Murtha, America has lost a great patriot”. House Minority Leader, Republican John Boehner said that “our nation has lost a decorated veteran”
