Prince Michael and Paris Jackson appeared after a rousing performance of Michael Jackson’s “Earth Song,” with a recording of Jackson accompanied by live performances from Celine Dion, Usher, Carrie Underwood, Smokey Robinson and Jennifer Hudson.

Alternative rock band Kings of Leon upset favorites Beyonce and Taylor Swift to win the record of the year Grammy for “Use Somebody.”

The win gave the Kings of Leon three Grammys out of four nominations this year, all thanks to last year’s “Only by the Night” album. The same album gave them three nominations last year, one of which they won.

“Use Somebody” lost out earlier in the show to Beyonce’s “SIngle Ladies” for song of the year.

“The best thing about winning Grammys is really it’s the first time our family gets to see the success we’re having,” Kings lead singer Caleb Followill said backstage. “We’re getting my mom wasted.”

Winners Sunday night also included Stephen Colbert, the Zac Brown Band and Green Day, but the focus of the broadcast was the face-off between Beyonce and Taylor Swift.

Beyonce, who led all nominees with 10 nods, picked up the first Grammy of the evening, song of the year, for “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).” Swift, who earned eight Grammy nominations, soon followed with a best country album win, for her CD “Fearless.”

“I feel like I’m accepting an impossible dream,” she said as she accepted, looking shocked. The award was Swift’s third overall — she won two in pre-telecast ceremonies.

Beyonce’s win was her first major-category Grammy ever. She picked up four Grammys earlier in the day during the pre-telecast awards presentation.

Beyonce missed the chance to deliver an acceptance speech since she was busy backstage getting ready to perform on the show.

The Zac Brown Band won best new artist. Lady Gaga, considered by many to be this year’s biggest breakout act, was ruled ineligible because she had a song released and nominated last year.

Stephen Colbert won best comedy album for “A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All!” Green Day won best rock album.

“Now I’m going to do shots with Kings of Leon,” Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong said.

The American Red Cross will benefit from a Grammy performance by nine-time Grammy winner Mary J. Blige and pop tenor Andrea Bocelli. After they sing Simon and Garfunkel’s classic “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” the recording will be sold through iTunes with proceeds going to the charity.

Few of the 109 Grammy categories are handed out during the CBS telecast. The vast majority were presented in a pre-telecast ceremony next door in the Los Angeles Convention Center.

One of those early presentations went to Swift, who beat Carrie Underwood, Martina McBride, Miranda Lambert and Lee Ann Womack for best female country vocal performance.

“This is my first Grammy, you guys, I mean this is a Grammy,” Swift said. “I live in awe of all the great people I competed with.”

Swift picked up her second Grammy just a few minutes later when “White Horse.” which she co-wrote with Liz Rose. won best country song.

Lady Gaga won two Grammys presented in the pre-telecast. Her single “Poker Face” beat out songs by the Black Eyed Peas, Madonna and Britney Spears in the best dance recording category. Her CD “The Fame” also won a Grammy for best electronic/dance.

The Grammy competition is much more than pop, rock, rap and country. There are 29 fields honored.

The best musical comeback story may be R&B singer Maxwell, who has been out of the spotlight for eight years. Maxwell’s album “Blacksummers’ Night” and hit single “Pretty Wings” brought him six Grammy nominations.

Canadian rapper Drake has two Grammy nominations, for best rap song and best rap solo performance, despite the fact he’s never released an album. His hit “Best I Ever Had” was only released on a mix tape. He’s still working on his album, which he hopes will be ready in March, he said.
