The Tokyo Motor Show is a biennial auto show held in October-November at the Makuhari Messe, Chiba City, Japan. The Honda VFR1200F is a V4 sport touring motorcycle that was announced by Honda in 2009.

Honda VFR1200F Motorcycle:

Engine:

The V4 architecture aligned with the road is kept from previous models but the V-TEC technology is discontinued. Instead the new engine incorporates the single overhead camshaft distribution system called Unicam which has been already tested on Honda’s offroad machines. This compact system reduces engine size which could be placed further forward in the bike’s frame while lowering its center of gravity. A 28° positioning of crank pins and a specific firing order of the cylinders allow to reduce vibrations. Therefore engineers avoid the need for a balance shaft and limit the weight of the engine. The throttle will be electric (TBW – throttle by wire).

Transmission:

Two transmissions will be available, either manual or automatic. The automatic transmission does not use a pulley as scooters do. It is a new sequential gearbox called dual clutch DCT (for Dual Clutch Transmission). This gearbox includes a concept already used in cars, including those of the Volkswagen Group (DSG gearbox) and BMW (SMG gearbox). Unlike gearboxes installed on scooters this device retains engine braking as with conventional motorcycle transmissions. It has two automatic modes (an fuel efficient ‘D’ mode and a sportier ‘S’ mode) and a sequential mode with which the driver can manually switch the 6 speed. A button at the right hand, marked AT/MT (for Automatic Transmission/Manual Transmission) allows the operator to switch from one mode to the other.

The VFR1200F incorporates dual combined braking system (CBS) as in previous generation VFRs, and anti-lock brakes (ABS) as standard equipment.
