Juan Martin del Potro and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga both won in straight sets.

“I feel it a little bit now, but I’ll try my best to recover for the next match,” said Nadal. “I’m here to work hard and try my best all the time.”

“No, I don’t want to talk about injuries,” said Nadal, already weary of discussion about the knee tendinitis that prevented him from defending his 2008 Wimbledon title in July. “No, no. I am a little bit tired to talk about injuries. I am here to try my best every day.

“I won the match in three sets, so, happy for that. I’m going to try my best next round. That’s all.”

German veteran Nicolas Kiefer had given an inconsistent Nadal a thorough workout in the previous round and last year’s semi-finalist got off to a stuttering start.

No. 7 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France downed countryman Julien Benneteau, ranked 43rd, 7-6 (4), 6-2, 6-4. No. 9 Gilles Simon of France retired in the fourth set with No. 24 Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain leading 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5), 1-0. No. 11 Fernando Gonzalez of Chile defeated No. 17 Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, 7-5, 6-4, 4-6.
